If you’ve been near the ocean, you know the difference between a real wave and a “wavelet.” Small children and rookie surfers begin in the shallow water, where there are lots of little waves that splash gently against your knees. Out in the deep water, the experienced surfers know that the stillness is only a sign that a big, powerful wave is gathering force.

In the workplace, listening is that time of stillness. We all want our voice to be heard. But listening gives us time to gather power and force. Sometimes, a little silence is what earns us the respect needed for our opinions to really make a difference.
