#21–Change Your Life by Changing the Way You Listen

Who knew that comedians were the best listeners? It all comes from the fine art of improv.

You’ve seen that show Whose Line Is It Anyway? Besides nearly dying of laughter at every episode, I’m always struck by one thing that never happens on this show. Nobody ever refuses to play the scene they’re given. You’ll never hear one of these comics tell the others, “You gave me nothing! Where were you going with that, anyway? I can’t work with you people.”

It’s because of the way they listen. They’re not just tossing a subject back and forth–they’re carefully attuned to anything they can use to build the laughs. Finding the grain of potential in every sentence uttered. Creating a real partnership, that creates something extraordinary.

The New England Journal of Medicine published a 21-year study that proved how learning improvisational skills (especially those based in the arts) protects the brain from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. What’s more, learning how to spontaneously cooperate with a partner helps your brain integrate its physical, rational and emotional responses. Imagine how it could affect your relationships!

Today when you’re talking to someone (or listening in a meeting), listen for something you can affirm and improve upon. See how it changes the way you listen? Imagine how it might revolutionize your life! To earn five points right now,  tell us about it in the comments below.
