If you have kids, or if you’re around kids…or if you turn on the radio…you’ve probably heard that chart-topping pop song about California girls. (Please, don’t make me spell the title the way it looks on the record. I have an old-fashioned regard for things like grammar.)
While this song doesn’t do much for me in itself, I have to admit that I entirely sympathize with unfettered adoration of California.
And one of the main things I love about it is how easy it is to live a healthy lifestyle here. We have great weather and a great landscape. We have beaches, mountains, deserts, and wide stretches of open land with only a single road winding through them. We have an abundance of locally grown food. And how many fitness experts do we have? Throw a stick at California and you’ll hit at least a couple of yoga instructors, personal trainers and outdoor adventure coaches before that stick hits the ground.
It’s ridiculously easy to connect with nature in California. But the truth is, it’s fairly easy anywhere. Whether you live in California, Kansas, or Connecticut, there’s a place not far from you where the sky seems to go on for miles. There’s a place where you can smell something besides car exhaust and restaurant fumes. Where you can see more green than just the logo on your coffee cup. Where you can encounter living things with an altogether different life pattern than yours.
You have to find this place! As Khalil Gibran reminds us, “Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.” And research tells us that just 20 minutes a day spent out in nature gives a significant lift to body’s vital signs.
Remember, thought into action = vitality
